Let's look at the world of elite sport. The world's best athletes periodize. They have intensity phases where they push to absolute limits — and they have planned recovery phases that are just as carefully structured as the training itself. No elite athlete would train at competition intensity every day for 8 weeks and expect to be better afterward. On the contrary: overtrained athletes are slower, more injury-prone and show cognitively worse decisions.

Sports science knows the concept of supercompensation: only when a sufficient recovery phase follows a training stimulus does the body adapt and grow stronger. If the next stimulus comes too early — before regeneration is complete — what solidifies is not strength, but exhaustion. The same applies to cognitive performance and leadership work.

For leaders, rest has a second, decisive dimension: modeling behavior. If you as a leader never rest, you send an unmistakable signal to your team: rest is not permitted. Those who rest rust.
